The entire West Coast has been pretty good for us. It definitely helped us get our music out. After that happened, iTunes sent out an e-mail blast to some crazy number of people.
There are a lot of people who ask us about the award. Q: What did it mean for you to be named the iTunes reggae album of the year?Ī: It helps us out a lot.
I like the way the 808 sounds, but I don’t know if there’s a connection. Is there an 808 connection?Ī: It’s the same name, and I’ve used the drum machine before.

Q: There’s a popular drum machine called the Roland TR-808, which frequently gets referenced in hip-hop, and 808 is also the area code of Hawaii. There are probably 15-20 bands that are getting played on the radio. People have listened to traditional Hawaiian music for a long time. Why is it so big there?Ī: It’s just an island music type of thing. Q: Tell me something about the Hawaiian reggae scene. I don’t actually listen to too much reggae. Everyone (in the band) listens to all kinds of stuff – what’s being played on the radio. We want people to make up their minds and make them feel the best about it.Ī: I like dub stuff, techno, old-school rock, Sade. Q: Your name probably makes people think of weed as well.Ī: A lot of people get that. It’s a color that represents the earth and nature and that kind of stuff. It’s a color – it means all kinds of stuff. Q: What does “the Green†mean? What does it refer to?Ī: We wanted a name that didn’t mean anything right off the bat. We named the band and decided to pursue an album and stuff, starting in February 2009.
We all have played music together and been in the scene, playing in different configurations. Half of us are from Hawaii Kai (in the Honolulu area), the other half are from Kailua. The release also won the distinction of being named iTunes’ best reggae album of 2010. The four guys who make up the Green (Caleb Keolanui, JP Kennedy, Ikaika Antone and Zion Thompson) released a self-titled album last year, which climbed into Billboard’s 2010 year-end top 10 reggae chart. One band, the Green, has recently emerged as one of Hawaii’s more popular reggae acts. From Simplisity to Butch Helemano to the Ka’ala Boys, the “Jawaiian†sound has been immensely popular in the islands, inspiring no less than three fulltime reggae radio stations. The easygoing sound and spirit of reggae music have inspired generations of Hawaiian natives, visitors and musicians. The tour started June 11 in New York City and concludes August 23 at Reggae On The Rocks in Morrison, CO.Reggae is huge in Hawaii. The Green is supporting Rebelution on the "Count Me In Tour" this summer. Vocalist-guitarist JP Kennedy and Mars have been friends since high school, but this was the first time the two forces shared the same concert stage. The Green opened for Bruno Mars at three sold-out concerts in Honolulu, HI in April. Hawai'i '13 won Reggae Album of the Year in the 2014 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, won Album of the Year in The 2013 Pier Awards, made AllMusic's Favorite Reggae Albums of 2013 list, and has had two songs used on CBS' Hawaii Five-0. Released last August on Easy Star Records, the record debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart, #1 on iTunes Reggae Chart, and #77 on the BillboardTop 200 Chart. "Something About It" is one of the lead singles from The Green's third studio album Hawai'i '13. With additional editing and direction from Ryan Miyamoto, the "Something About It" video showcases the band's tour life on and off stage with friends and fans worldwide. Throughout 2013, Jesse Yonover filmed The Green on tour in Hawaii, New Zealand, California, Washington, and beyond.
